Our Next Star

If humans needed to travel to another star, how would we do that? The premise of needing to leave our planet, let alone our solar system, seems a bit outlandish. That is, until you begin to understand they myriad of things that could make Earth uninhabitable.

So if we really needed to leave, how would we make that happen? What must be considered and invented and understood? Believe it or not, there is a project for that: The 100 Year Starship Initiative. Although it  was launched by DARPA, they say there are no ties to the government. Mae Jamison, the world’s first woman of color to travel in space and project lead for 100YSS, has this to say.

The 100 Year Starship™ will make the capability of human travel beyond our solar system to another star a reality over the next 100 years. 100YSS™ will embark on a journey across time and space …  If my language is dramatic, it is because this project is monumental. And our team is both invigorated and sobered by the confidence DARPA has in us to make interstellar flight a reality.

I can hardly wait to see what they produce!
